In 1939, there were 1.5 million Jewish
children alive in Europe.
Only about 10 percent survived the Holocaust.
Some escaped to safe shores, some survived the camps, some the forests, some
at the hands of abusive protectors.
Only a handful were saved by non-Jewish rescuers, who, at great risk to
their own lives, took them in as an extraordinary act of kindness.

from almost certain death by an equally small number of
non-Jewish neighbors, friends, or even - in many cases - total
strangers. These rescuers, men and women of uncommon decency,

attics, or hastily-dug bunkers.
